Police Officer Killed in DeWitt Accident

I just read a tragic story online about a Clinton County Sheriff’s Deputy who died on his way to work.  The officer (whose name I will not publish) was riding his motorcycle to work and apparently struck a deer, causing him to be thrown from his bike.  Several tractor trailers were able to avoid him on the roadway but a third did not, causing his death.

My sincerest sympathies and condolences go out to his family, friends, and colleagues.  Simply put this is a devastating loss.

There are unique laws relating to motorcycle accidents in Michigan.  Had the officer died without contact from the truck and just from the deer, he would not have been entitled to Michigan No-Fault Insurance benefits.  Because his fatal injuries were apparently caused by the truck, his family would then likely be entitled to Survivor’s Loss benefits.  This includes lost wages, funeral expenses, household service payments, and other benefits.

If the truck driver should have reasonably avoided the accident, as did the two trucks in front of him, the officer’s family may be able to pursue a Michigan wrongful death lawsuit against the driver and trucking company.  Much of this will depend on the results of the State Police Investigation.

Tanker Truck Crash & Gasoline Spill

A tanker truck accident on a major highway caused significant injuries and a shutdown of the highway.  A tanker truck carrying 10,000 gallos of gasoline overturned  and spilled a significant amount of gasoline on the roadway.  Accident injury victims were taken to several local hospitals.

My wishes for a speedy recovery go out to the accident injury victims.  Although police are still investigating the cause of the accident, it is clear that there are no minor accidents with the large tanker trucks that travel our major highways.  Motorists who escape the actual collision are still in peril from the spilling gasoline and other toxic substances.

Victims of tanker truck accidents should consult with an experienced truck accident lawyer as soon as possible after the accident so that a prompt investigation can be started.  It is essential to photograph the roadway and vehicles, track down witnesses, and have an accident reconstruction expert do an analysis of the facts and data to assist with determining liability for the accident.

Dump Truck Accident Settlement

A lawsuit involving a dump truck accident that killed two people has settled for $900,000.  The dump truck driver had run a red light and crashed into the station wagon occupied by two men who suffered fatal injuries.  The truck driver had plead guilty to careless driving and involuntary manslaughter for the accident.  The two men who died were both retired.

This accident shows just how deadly a driving mistake can be when a truck driver is not paying attention.  With the use of cell phones, text messaging, and eating in vehicles as a regular occurrence nowadays, the number of these types of truck accidents seems to be reported all too frequently.   When a large truck, like a dump truck, is involved in an accident with a passenger vehicle, the likelihood of there being a catastrophic injury is signficant.
