Tanker Truck Exploosion in Hazel Park

I saw on the news this morning the story on the Tanker Truck Explosion in Hazel Park last night on I-75.  Thankfully, there were no fatalities. Michigan State Police believe that a 27-year-old Clawson man apparently lost control of his car while driving about 70 m.p.h. in a curve on the expressway, which has a suggested speed limit of 50 m.p.h. He swerved into the tanker truck, driven by a 45-year-old Armada man.

The cab and the trailer separated as the tanker, carrying 9,600 gallons of gasoline and 4,600 gallons of diesel fuel, crashed.  The truck exploded as a result. State police confirmed that the fire was so hot it caused the 9 MIle Road overpass to collapse. No one was injured when the bridge collapsed.

Police further stated that at time of the accident, thick black smoke billowed from the scene and flames shot up 150 to 200 feet, snarling traffic on both sides. Authorities advised the thousands of commuters heading for work this morning to look for alternative routes. That section of I-75 — from 8 Mile to I-696 — carries an average of more than 160,000 vehicles a day, according to state traffic counts. It remains closed at the time of this article.

Tanker Truck Crash & Gasoline Spill

A tanker truck accident on a major highway caused significant injuries and a shutdown of the highway.  A tanker truck carrying 10,000 gallos of gasoline overturned  and spilled a significant amount of gasoline on the roadway.  Accident injury victims were taken to several local hospitals.

My wishes for a speedy recovery go out to the accident injury victims.  Although police are still investigating the cause of the accident, it is clear that there are no minor accidents with the large tanker trucks that travel our major highways.  Motorists who escape the actual collision are still in peril from the spilling gasoline and other toxic substances.

Victims of tanker truck accidents should consult with an experienced truck accident lawyer as soon as possible after the accident so that a prompt investigation can be started.  It is essential to photograph the roadway and vehicles, track down witnesses, and have an accident reconstruction expert do an analysis of the facts and data to assist with determining liability for the accident.
